The Migrant Education Program at Burnet CISD is dedicated to ensuring that children of migratory agricultural and fishing workers have equal access to a high-quality education. Our mission is to help migrant students overcome the educational challenges associated with frequent moves, interrupted schooling, and other barriers to academic success.

The Burnet CISD Migrant Services staff works closely with students and families to provide support that promotes academic achievement, school stability, and full participation in educational programs. Services may include assistance with enrollment, access to instructional resources, and coordination with community agencies to meet students’ academic and social needs.

We are committed to supporting every migrant student in Burnet CISD so they can achieve their educational goals and reach their full potential.

What is Migrant Education?

The purpose of the Migrant Education Program is to help migratory children find success through education. The MEP specifically works to ensure that migratory students are able to meet challenging academic standards, receive a high school diploma or equivalent, and successfully transition to college, a career, or the military.

The Migrant Education Program is a federal program that provides funding to every state to help meet the needs of the migratory students who live, work in, or move to that state. In Texas, this program is managed by the Texas Education Agency.

To be eligible for classification as a migrant student, a child must have a parent, spouse, or guardian who is a migratory agricultural worker or migratory fisher, and has moved from one school district to another. In states that are comprised of a single school district, they must have moved from one school administrative area to another within that district.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Migrant Education Program?

  • The child is between the ages of 3 and 21.
  • The child or child’s parent or guardian made a qualifying move in the preceding 36 months as a migratory agricultural worker or a migratory fisher.
  • The migratory worker must have moved or traveled across school district boundaries and lived away from their home district while engaging in this work.
  • The migratory worker must have done this work and made the move because of economic necessity.
