Chain of Command

Chain of Command Introduction

Burnet CISD (BCISD) is committed to addressing questions and concerns from our stakeholders as quickly and effectively as possible. In BCISD, the chain of command refers to the established levels of communication and authority within the school district. This process helps ensure questions or concerns are handled efficiently, fairly, and by the person most familiar with the situation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the "Chain of Command"?

In BCISD, the chain of command is the communication path used to address concerns, questions, or suggestions. It begins at the lowest appropriate level — typically the person directly involved with the situation. Many issues can be resolved quickly by speaking directly with the teacher, coach, or staff member involved. This ensures timely and accurate information.

Why can’t I start with the Board of Trustees?

The Board of Trustees is not part of the chain of command for resolving day-to-day concerns. Their role is governance — setting policy, adopting budgets, and providing oversight. They do not manage daily operations or intervene in individual student or personnel matters.

If the Board receives a concern, it will be referred to the Superintendent for handling. The Superintendent will then direct the concern to the appropriate level in the chain of command or the right staff members to address it effectively and efficiently. Board members have no authority as individuals and will refer concerns to the Superintendent, who will ensure they are addressed at the appropriate level in accordance with district policy.

Why can’t I start with the Superintendent?

The Superintendent is responsible for the overall operation of the district and is often focused on big-picture initiatives, district-wide planning, and strategic goals. When questions or concerns bypass the appropriate starting point, they usually have to be sent back to the person best positioned to resolve them. Following the chain of command helps ensure a fair, efficient, and thorough process.
