Distinguished Former School Board Member
The 2025 Distinguished Former School Board Member is Mary Ann Jones.

Mary Ann served on the BCISD Board of Trustees from 2002 until 2015. As an educator for 30 years, she brought a unique student-centered, academic-focused perspective for the board. She provided valuable teaching insight to discussions and was an advocate for all staff. She was also an outstanding ambassador for the Bertram community.

During her tenure, she was instrumental in numerous initiatives that propelled the district toward student success. Under her leadership, the district received the HEB Excellence in Education Small District Award. Several new programs, including culinary, soccer, and engineering, were introduced. The board prioritized increasing pay scales and improving benefits for all staff members, including implementing a sick leave bank. School safety was a key focus during her time on the board, even before it became a national issue. The board also passed a bond to address aging facilities and install turf at Bulldog Field. Additionally, she served on the board when Keith McBurnett was hired as superintendent. Keith stated "She was an exemplary Board Member who diligently researched issues, listened to all perspectives, voted her conscience, and ultimately supported the will of the board."

Beyond her dedication to education, she has been an active community member and church member at the First United Methodist Church of Bertram, where she sings in the choir and previously served as financial secretary. She has volunteered countless hours reading to students and working one-on-one with those struggling. She is the ultimate Bulldog fan!

Distinguished Former Burnet CISD Employee
The 2025 Distinguished Former BCISD Employee is Leona Williams.

Mrs. Williams embodies what it means to have a servant's heart. She graduated from Howard Payne College in 1945 with a temporary teaching certificate, and in 1951 earned her Teacher's Permanent Elementary Certificate. She began her teaching career in Goldthwaite and taught in various locations based on her husband's work, including Burnet from 1948-1951, and again from 1952-1954. No matter where she lived, Burnet was always home, and she returned to the community after a long teaching career.

After retirement, she became a successful real estate agent, achieving million-dollar seller status, and even worked on the census. Her passion, however, remained in teaching and working with youth. She dedicated time to Sunset Community Home, working with mentally challenged boys, forming deep and lasting connections with them. She also served as a substitute teacher in Burnet CISD for many years, only stepping away to care for her ailing husband. Later, she provided comfort for families at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, ensuring their loved ones were well cared for.

Mrs. Williams has always been an active member of the Burnet Community. As a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, she taught the "Eighty to Heaven" Sunday School class for 20 years and was deeply involved in the Baptist Women's group. A dedicated supporter of St. Jude's, she was also recognized as the Burnet Chamber Senior Honor Citizen.

Today she lives with her son in the Austin area. At 90, she learned to use the internet and drove her car until she was 98! She loves problem solving, reading, and writing letters, known for her immaculate penmanship. Mrs. Williams was unable to attend the Banquet, so her longtime friend and former co-worker, Mr. Eddie Snider, received the award on her behalf.
